On February 7th, will debut an update to the beloved unscripted show that began life on Bravo back in 2003. The show, then and now, focuses on five gay men with different areas of expertise (food, clothing, interiors, grooming, and socializing) who improve and enrich the life of a straight man in need of tszujing.
The new 'Queer Eye' will join a television landscape that celebrates diverse perspectives across the spectrum of sexuality — from 'Drag Race' to 'Orange Is The New Black.' That landscape might not exist which revolutionized reality TV at a time where LGBTQ voices were still few and far between in popular media. The OG Queer Eye also proved to be a star-making vehicle for the 'Fab Five' at its heart: Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Kyan Douglas, and Ted Allen.
Now, interior design expert takes a look back on his favorite moments from the original series.
The Fab Five work together to help John, a guy with country sensibilities, craft the perfect wedding proposal. Thom's contribution? A stunning Moroccan-style tent to serve as the ultimate venue. Thom says: “Sometimes, in design as in love, it’s all about the details."
Rich, who has worn a toupee for years (even around his wife and kids) is finally convinced to take it off. To support his personal growth, Thom designs a stylish new living room that encourages Rich to take style risks, at home and in his personal grooming. Thom says: “Richard had the confidence to expose his true self - and what’s better than having the conviction to stand and be seen for who you really are!”
John, a bereaved retiree who is struggling to move forward without his late wife, gets some much-needed advice and emotional support. As part of his journey, Thom redesigns John's home to both honor his wife's memory, and encourage healthy growth and a new chapter. Thom says: "Moving forward is not always about moving on.”
The Fab Five help a man frustrated with corporate life realize his dream: opening a restaurant. Thom designs an intimate dining experience on the Lower East Side for the launch. Thom says: "The right atmosphere is the perfect ingredient to a inviting and memorable dining experience.”
A blended family in New Jersey creates shared Christmas traditions with help from the guys. Thom creates festive Christmas decor for the holiday. Thom says: "Sometimes a wonderful life includes bells. Ho ho ho!”
