Socialite, fashion designer, and artist Gloria Vanderbilt has passed away at the age of 95. According to , Vanderbilt died with family and friends by her side. Her son, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, remembered his mother in a statement this morning. "Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms," Cooper said. "She was a painter, a writer and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend. She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they'd tell you: She was the youngest person they knew—the coolest and most modern."

Over the years, Vanderbilt’s fascinating, privileged and often challenging life, including the loss of her son Carter at the age of 23, was widely chronicled. She was the great-great-granddaughter of railroad and shipping magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt and the custody battle between her aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, and her mother was called the trial of the century. Vanderbilt found success in the 1970s with a pioneering line of designer denim, and she was also known as a poet, model, and actress. She had a vibrant sense of personal style and lived in a series of much-photographed apartments and houses. Here we remember Vanderbilt with candid photos of her at home with family over the years.
