The television star and design-lover shares her favorite things
As a teen who enjoyed decorating her own room, Ellen DeGeneres discovered her first big design lesson: Water beds are not, in fact, all that comfortable. "I can't believe my parents let me have one," she says. "You live and learn." Television's talk-show sweetheart has emerged as the design world's biggest fan-girl—albeit one with a taste level to rival that of some of the nation's top decorators. She has traded in the Pier 1 rattan chairs of her youth for designer collectibles by Prouvé and Perriand. With her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, she has also purchased, renovated, and sold more than a half-dozen homes in the last few years. (Their stunning makeover of a Southern California ranch appeared on the cover of Siweb in May 2013.) Her next project is , a reality competition for furniture designers set to debut next year on HGTV. The best design has a "touch of whimsy," she says, "and should feel relaxed."
