Whenever a new paint brand launches, we here at Siweb are eager to see it immediately—the quality of the colors themselves, of course, is first and foremost what we want to check out. But second is the names of said colors: We are endlessly fascinated by the monikers given to certain hues and the origin stories behind them.

Now, following in the paint-speckled footsteps of other high-end European paint brands, comes , a collection from Ireland-based General Paints Group, launching this week in the United States.

Curator gave Siweb an exclusive sneak peek at its 144-strong palette of water-based, low-VOC paints, which come in five finishes (the specialty Enhanced Matte and Subtle Sheen, as well as gloss, satin, and eggshell). In the image above, the walls are painted in Copper Dome, an homage to the aged copper domes one finds across Dublin’s cityscape. The blush pink in the hallway is Fair of Face, which the company says is an “ode to pale Irish skin and prominent rosy cheeks.”

But Curator did more than just take its names from time-honored Irish tropes. The stories behind many of these paint colors are particularly compelling: They tell the tales of Irish artisans—jewelers, fashion designers, potters, and more—with whom the company worked closely to create the entire collection.

For instance, Showstopper is a vibrant royal blue devised with Margaret O’Connor, a milliner based in County Clare who trained with Philip Treacy and has designed hats worn by Lady Gaga. This blue shows up often in her work, and she wanted the color to portray the same boldness. A floor painted in Soft Sun, a collaboration with weaver Deirdre Duffy, evokes the golden hues of her traditional hand-loomed Irish blankets.

“Our hope is to inspire U.S. architects, interior designers, homeowners, and style aficionados, and to ultimately help their rooms tell a story,” says Kevin O’Connor (no relation to Margaret), managing director of the family-run General Paints Group—his father, Ronan, founded the brand in 1953.

Curator paints are at select stores in Connecticut, with more availability in stores across California and Oregon to come later this year.
