Interested in updating your living room but a complete overhaul isn't in the budget? Dolley Levan from shows how she made a dramatic transformation with just a few key changes.
ELLEDECOR.com: The room seems so much brighter now, even though the wall color and most of the furniture are the same. How did you maximize the light?
Dolley Levan: The room originally had shutters which are easy and practical to use, but they do limit the amount of light that comes in even with the blinds open. Taking them away and adding allowed them open the window up completely and let all of the natural light come in during the day.
ED: What new pieces did you add to the room, and what did you subtract?
DL: They had selected their own sofa. The other pieces were slowly selected and added; these include the , , and ottoman. The accessories really bring life and personality into the space. People tend to look at styled interiors and think that the furniture should complete the room. Even though they make up the larger pieces of the space, a space is not really complete looking until it is fully accessorized. It's like a dress without any jewelry and accessories.
ED: Who were you designing for? What needs were you trying to keep in mind?
DL: This space was designed for a young family that has a great sense of style but had a very hard time pulling it altogether. The toughest challenge was trying to keep their home neutral enough for them (they were scared of too much color commitment) and timeless yet making sure they had a space that felt unique and upscale but within a budget.
ED: What advice do you have for people who want transform their living room on a budget ?
DL: Have an inspiration photo on Pinterest or a physical pinboard and figure out what you can keep, what you need to get rid of, and what you really need to buy. If you have a furniture piece that just isn't working, sometimes you have to cut your losses and let it go. I do believe in buying what you love, so if that means saving up for the perfect chairs, you should be patient and do one small change at a time.
If you already have a great sofa and/or chair, consider reupholstering them with an updated fabric to transform the space. Also, you can change out your accessories such as the window treatment, rug, lighting and pillows, and these small changes can make a big impact as well.
