New York is now home to the best restaurant in the world.
, the contemporary American restaurant in the city's Flatiron District, was honored with the top spot at the awards in Melbourne, Australia Wednesday. Co-owners Will Guidara and Daniel Humm expressed their gratitude following the ceremony in a bromance-filled video posted on Twitter:
This is the first time an American restaurant has topped the list, which is compiled by a of approximately 1,500 food writers, chefs and restaurateurs, since French Laundry took the number one spot in 2003 and 2004.
Osteria Francescana, in Modena, Italy, was named number two, followed by El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain. All the other winners in the top 10 are outside the United States, and the next-highest ranking American restaurant is in Pocantico Hills, New York's Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which placed 11th.
Eleven Madison Park serves a $295 seasonal tasting menu for both lunch and dinner, and beginning April 11 it will offer an 11-course retrospective menu focused on its most significant dishes over the past 11 years. Then, on June 9, it will close for a summer-long of the dining room and kitchen. The staff is heading to the Hamptons, where it will open a pop-up called open exclusively to American Express cardholders.
