From supermodel Miranda Kerr to the pop crooner Sam Smith, healing crystals are having a moment in Hollywood. Even reality star Kylie Jenner, who's been spotted (as one does) recently released a on crystal healing via her . But Hollywood and spiritualism have never made for the most authentic bedfellows, so what's behind this newfound fascination with crystals?
Stone Is Having A Moment
It doesn't hurt that stone's aesthetic bona fides are at an all-time high. Designer Max Lamb's is omnipresent in the ; Chen Chen and Kai Williams's embody the kind of rough-edged modernity upon which many a Tumblr is fixated; and are a paean to the glory of rocks in their natural state. It helps that the look is complementary to the hugely popular sculptural, almost primitive ceramic wares we're seeing of late, and it speaks to a similarly seventies aesthetic. It marks a return to something textural and earthy — haute granola, if you will. People seem to be craving raw and organic in their decor as much as their diets.
But What Do Crystals Do?
Aside from the visual appeal of crystals — who can deny the visceral high provided by a particularly pretty gem? — many believe they make an impact that goes far beyond the physical realm. According to Mark Phillips, one half of the LA duo , crystals provide a "grounded, earthy energy" that helps to balance a space. With a bicoastal client base that includes actors, musicians and harried entrepreneurs, Phillips and his partner Martin Aguiano know that's just what the doctor ordered—metaphysically or otherwise.
But what exactly do they do? "Crystals bring a touch of magic into a space," offers Sameer Reddy, founder and owner of , which provides life-coaching and energy healing services. "They work on an aesthetic as well as a spiritual level to positively enhance an environment." , a lifelong Angeleno who studied under the author and de facto fairy godmother of crystal healing, , suggests certain crystals can be used to mitigate negative electromagnetic energy and "recycle neutral energy into positive energy." Lee suggests psychically creating zones for the different crystal energies, citing the potential of some stones to enhance negative or disruptive energy in a room.
And that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. (Do those have healing powers, too? Serious question.) Here's a little more on how different crystals cultivate energy around your home and beyond.
For Good Karma
Quartz is regarded as a "master crystal," says Phillips, thanks to what he calls its innate "programmability." Many people keep it in their space to "amplify their intentions." Basically, you get in what you put out.
To Foster Collaboration
When paired with ocean jasper, clear quartz works to bring about cohesion in a group, says Lee, who suggests having them in the dining room while throwing a dinner party. Clear quartz clusters work as "energy filtration systems," Lee notes.
Amethyst is another perennial favorite, known for its spiritual application and protective energy. And according to Reddy, "everyone should have citrine, smoky quartz and rose quartz," a potent trifecta that offers protection for the mind, body and heart, respectively. "I recommend that clients place the rose quartz bedside, while situating the citrine and smoky quartz in the main living spaces." Citrine specifically is all about manifestation and bringing things about in the world, experts say.
To Help Ground You
Pyrite, also known as Fool's Gold, hematite and black tourmaline all have grounding properties and can be used in an office space to recycle neutral energy into positive energy and help facilitate things.
Something tells me we're not in Kansas anymore.
Lee and Phillips both cite a universal spiritual shift in the last few years to which the increased interest in energy and healing crystals can at least be partially attributed, but "there are a lot of people on the bandwagon, for sure," says Lee. "You're going to always have people who are dilettantes." We can't say where your favorite celebrities fall on this particular spectrum—if they're even still in this universe.
