Nothing beats the beach. But Ocean City, New Jersey, apparently beats all other beaches.
Thirty coastal states nominated one of their sandy beaches before going head-to-head (or, uh, wave-to-wave) to earn the title of "2016 Best Beach In America." Original contenders in the poll from included cities ranging from Gulf Shores, Alabama, to Nye Beach, Oregon. Ultimately, and Huntington Beach, California shored up as the two finalists.
Though the results were based on votes alone, we can guess they had to do with Ocean City's eight miles of sand, 2.5-mile-long boardwalk, two amusement piers, and many quirky events throughout the year (anyone care to attend a or a ?).
"The contest included a lot of beautiful beaches, but the voters knew that Ocean City is much more than that," Ocean City mayor Jay Gillian said . "It's a tradition and a part of life for generations of residents and guests. Days on the beach and boardwalk nights in Ocean City are the fabric of many fond memories for people across the country."
Ready to toast to Ocean City? Put down the flutes. Founded in the late 1800s as a Methodist religious retreat, Ocean City is still a dry town and public drinking of alcohol is prohibited.
