Modern design and traditional quilts don't always go hand in hand, but quilter Denyse Schmidt is changing that. Mixing artisanal methods—employed by a crew of Amish seamstresses—with fresh colors and graphics, the quilts strike an unusual balance. Firmly rooted in craft and community, they are also at home in modern homes and galleries. Earlier this year, Ralph Pucci International in New York City showcased Schmidt's quilts alongside furniture by Jim Zivic and Robert Bristow. Schmidt's early and new works are on view at the University of Bridgeport's Arnold Bernhard Center Gallery and are available for purchase beginning December 1 at the gallery's holiday boutique.
